How Do You View Critical Literacy...

5. You have almost completed this semester, so, how do you view Critical Literacy now? If you have any comments and suggestion, please do as it helps for the betterment of the course as a whole.

Critical Literacy is an interesting subject for all students to learn. Even though it is quite tough and difficult to understand but I take it as challenge for me as an English student to improve my reading and writing skills. It is true CL is a killer subject for me but I need to endure it because nothing is easy in this world as long we learned and face the difficulties.   This subject is worthy for me because it has given me a lot of information that I can apply it for my future carrier.

In Critical Literacy it taught how to analyse article by using “rule of ten” which is different from the previous subject that I have learned. It gives me clearly view on particular issues on what the writer try to let the readers know. Apart from that, at the beginning of this subject, I have learned to analyse video and visual aids which is more interesting and different for me. This subject also has taught me to differentiate between facts and opinion because occasionally it gives mix-up between this two.

Other than that, I am glad to learn about this subject because it is different from other subject that I have learned which I need analyse the article, learn how to produce counter arguments and how to make citation. It also has opened my eyes that every statement must come with evidenced rather than make our own assumption. I am very grateful to the lectures that are willingly to teach this subject. End of my entry for this subject, thank you.

Life is Merely Illusion

4. Proposition: Life is a mere illusion and just like the world is a stage as we use it as a stepping stone for a showcase of our talents. Provide at least two (2) premises or counter arguments for the proposition. Write in complete paragraph(s).

Is life merely illusion? Have we ever wondered about the meaning of life? Well, I have to agree with the statement above which is “Life is a mere illusion and just like the world is a stage as we use it as a stepping stone for a showcase of our talents”. First, most people in this world accept the norms and categories they have been given without asking the truly deep question of life. Family, the media, school, and other social components shape our viable perspective version of life.

As we all, we as a human being live in this world just for a temporary moment. Most of the human being, they have variety of talents which consist of positive and negative vibe. Life is full of drama. Even every person has different personality and attitude which possess them into different talents. The talents don’t occur straightforwardly. We need to build itself with full of passion and commitments. We need to use our talent precisely as our life is like a stepping stone. According to Shakespeare’s “…All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players…” this statement proves that our life is a like cycle which can be good at one time or vice versa.

Besides that, according to Einstein stated in his quote “… reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent…” From the statement above he is referring the reality is happening in life of today societies is a fake but we need to hold what we understand about persistently, even if what we know is just an illusion.

Incident About BFM Newsreader...

3. “The latest incdent about BFM newsreader being threatened with death, rape and being burnt alive by those I assume to be Malay-Muslim netizens brings forth serious questions for this country. Is this country safe for our children to live in? if a simple point is raised against such issue as Hudud or even such issue as democracy and clean elections can produce outburst of murder, rape and burning people alive, what does it say about our country, its citizens and our leadership?” …Prof Dr. Mohamad Tajuddin Mohamad Rasdi (Speaks Up, The Sun, March 26,2015)

How do you view above statement?

This issue is about Aisyah Tajuddin who is actually the presenter of business radio station BFM 89.9.She was being treated with death, rape and being burn alive because of her video questioning the enforcement of hudud in Kelantan. The video was being posted in the BFM Projek Diolog BFM Kupas is actually to question the PAS-led Kelantan government’s priorities.

After the death threats against Aisyah have become such serious issue which is Prof  Dr Mohamad Tajuddin’s daughter, he is questioning either Malaysia is safe or not if a simple  point of view against hudud or issue as democracy and clean election can lead to murder, rape and burning alive. Prof Dr Mohamad Tajuddin has stated that “…I have noticed that one’s making threats of this nature come from mostly Malays who I assume Muslims”. His statement has argued about Malays who are being cynical about the issue without checking the message BFM try to deliver.

I think citizens should not threatening Aisyah in a bad way such as death, rape and being burn alive. Malaysia is one of country that practices parliamentary democracy system where every problem can be solved by using a predetermined law. However it is unprofessional when they treat people by using an internet as a medium to critic and condemning without think the consequences will happen in future. These types of societies known as “keyboard warrior”. They just brave to critic in front of their computer or laptop rather than face to face which not professional at all.

Besides that, Aisyah has admitted that she has no intention to insult any religion and she did apologise for incident that happen. BFM also has stated that”… Aisyah had not written the script and the views in the video did not reflect her stance on the law”, The Malaysian Insider (2015). Citizens should stop threatened with death, rape, being burn alive and let the law solve this issue. We as a Malaysian civilian should unite and respect each other so that we can live in peacefully.

Stereotyping : "Women Shouldn't Behind The Wheel"

2. Stereotyping is exaggerated generalizations associated with a categorizing system; they go beyond the facts at hand and make claims that usually have no valid basis. However, it is also something that most people find difficult to avoid from doing. So, let’s explore your sense of tendency to make generalizations by expanding the following statement:

Women shouldn’t behind the wheel…

In my opinion, I don’t agree with the statement “women shouldn’t behind the wheel”. It is because women nowadays can think wisely about the safeness while driving a car especially mother that take along with their children. Men should not underestimate women capabilities when they are driving. They think that women who are driving a car can cause an accident, driving with emotion and sometimes they think women are selfish while driving. This issue happen because of stereotyping which is they judge people based on their own opinions and assumption. Men always think that they can drive better than women. However according to Kendel (2012) stated that   “in 2007, statistics reveal men were involved in 6.1 million car accidents while women were involved in 4.4 million”. From the statement it can be proven that women are not the main reasons who are can cause an accident but it is vice versa. Men sometimes drive with emotions. They cannot see other people who are faster than them and they started to race which is may lead danger for other road user.

Societies should support every women behind the wheel. Currently, we can see women have made driving as their carrier. For example, in our country itself, we can see women drive a taxi and buses. It is good to have a female driver because sometimes citizen especially women doesn’t feel comfortable to ride male driver. Certain of male driver like to take advantage towards women passenger. For example, they tend tease their women passenger by using indecent words, touch them and more. It is somewhat dangerous for women and it better to have female driver in our societies. I think we should salute to all female driver give all support to them. Lastly, men and women can be equal as long they do their best to drive safely.
